This July I assisted in leading a group of 16 participants (with 4 other leaders) on a 3 night mountaineering trip in Yoho National Park in BC through the ACC Columbia Mountains Section. We stayed in the backcountry Stanley Mitchell Hut, which is operated by the Alpine Club of Canada. The hut is located on the lands of the Blackfoot, Ktunaxa, Tsuut’ina, and Metis Peoples.

Early in the winter a couple fellow board members in the Alpine Club of Canada Columbia Mountains Section and I started planning a club ski touring and split boarding trip to the Asulkan Cabin in Glacier National Park. We booked the entire ACC hut for 3 nights at the end of February, arriving on Friday and leaving Monday.

I was able to join owner Eric and a couple of his staff on a sled ride with two teams of dogs. It was fascinating to watch the process of running dogs first hand and learn from the team about the joys of mushing.

After enjoying a weekend in St. John’s, I headed for the hiking trails along the east coast of the Bonavista Panisuala and I cannot recommend this area enough. On top of the beautiful views, the region was full of cute bakeries, trendy breweries, delicious food, and the most hospitable people.

St. John’s is a beautiful harbour city of just over 100,000 people on the east coast of Newfoundland. It boasts colourful streets, an entertaining night life, breathtaking coastal views, and some of the nicest people you will ever meet. I visited for a weekend at the end of their tourism season (June to August) and had a wonderful time exploring everything the city had to offer.
